Mustafa Kemal Izzet was born in 1974 in Mile End, London. His father is a Turkish Cypriot who came to England as a small boy, and his mother is English. He won nine caps for Turkey between 2000 and 2004.

His younger brother, Kemal (born 1980, known as Kem), was also a professional footballer – playing 471 games for Colchester United between 2001 and 2013.
